1 Sky Patterns 2 Northern Constellations 3 Tilted View 4 Celestial Poles 5 Tracking the Stars

Below are the monthly sky maps of the Northern Hemisphere. Click on a month and it will open in another window. Print and study the picture.
It is best to view the stars on a moonless night and in a dark area. City lights make it hard to see the stars. Hold the paper over your head with the map north pointing toward the North. The map is close to what you will see, but it is not perfect. Match up the map constellations with what you see. The red circle is around the star Polaris, the Northern Star, the last star in the Little Dipper handle (the constellation Ursa Minor).
Because our earth's northern axis points directly toward Polaris, all the other constellations and stars appear to rotate around Polaris. Polaris and the other stars and constellations were used by early explorers to navigate around the world.
With a little practice you can amaze your friends with your star and constellation knowledge.
